Practice Gap: Board certification is the primary mechanism to evaluate and assure competence in medical practice. Internal Medicine certification examinations require a recollection of various specialty and clinical scenarios to demonstrate competence. With the range of therapeutic areas in internal medicine being broader than any other medical specialty, most physicians are unable to maintain best-practice knowledge and skills in all areas of practice.
