Deep Dive Into Shoulder Imaging
This ARRS Virtual Symposium on Thursday, October 10, will focus on advancements in shoulder imaging and its applications. The first half of the symposium will cover the use of imaging in diagnosing and treating rotator cuff pathology, glenohumeral joint instability, and inflammatory conditions. It will emphasize the strengths and limitations of various imaging modalities and their role in preoperative planning, postoperative evaluation, and long-term follow-up. The second half will highlight pediatric shoulder imaging, contrasting it with adult cases, and address diagnostic challenges related to tumors and tumor-like conditions. The sessions are designed for musculoskeletal learners and will include detailed case studies to enhance interpretative skills and clinical decision-making in shoulder imaging.
Shoulder pain is a common and disabling complaint experienced in a large majority of the population. There is a broad set of differential considerations for shoulder pain with poor specificity in physical examination tests, making imaging crucial in the diagnosis, characterization and ultimately the treatment of this clinical presentation. It is important to emphasize imaging tools available for shoulder assessment, addressing the strengths, weaknesses and indications for individual imaging modalities. The comprehensive nature of this symposium provides an excellent opportunity for musculoskeletal learners from various backgrounds and levels of training to enhance their knowledge and skills. The symposium will describe current best practice for evaluation of a variety of pathology in the glenohumeral joint.
Learning Outcomes
After attending the symposium, participants will be able to:
- Identify the most suitable imaging studies for various shoulder conditions, understanding the indications, strengths, and limitations of different modalities such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and CT, and selecting the appropriate imaging technique based on the clinical scenario.
- Recognize imaging features of rotator cuff pathologies, ranging from tendinosis to full-thickness tears and rotator cuff arthropathy. They will be equipped with the knowledge to interpret these findings accurately and understand their clinical implications.
- Understand imaging protocols and findings associated with shoulder arthroplasty, including preoperative planning, postoperative evaluation, long-term follow-up, and the identification of common complications related to shoulder implants.
- Diagnose inflammatory conditions such as bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis, and differentiate between benign and malignant shoulder tumors using imaging. They will learn to interpret the characteristic imaging features associated with these conditions and apply this knowledge in clinical practice.
Registration for the symposium opens August 28, 2024. Your membership must be current to receive the discounted member rate. Nonmembers who wish to apply for ARRS membership and receive the member registration rate must do so no later than October 3, 2024.
